The region was given the name Madaripur in honor of the 14th-century Sufi saint Hazrat Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar (R). He arrived from a Middle Eastern nation to spread Islam throughout this area.
In 1854, Madaripur was created as a Bakerganj subdistrict. In 1984, it was transformed into a separate district. Haji Shariatullah led the historic Faraizi movement in Madaripur (1781–1840). Additionally, the district made a significant contribution to the 1971 War of Independence.
