In the center of Bangladesh, in the Dhaka division, is the district known as Madaripur. This district is bounded to the north by Faridpur and Munshiganj, to the east by Shariatpur, to the west by Faridpur and Gopalganj, and to the south by Barisal.
The region was given the name Madaripur in honor of the 14th-century Sufi saint Hazrat Badiuddin Zinda Shah Madar (R). He arrived from a Middle Eastern nation to spread Islam throughout this area.
In 1854, Madaripur was created as a Bakerganj subdistrict. In 1984, it was transformed into a separate district. Haji Shariatullah led the historic Faraizi movement in Madaripur (1781–1840). Additionally, the district made a significant contribution to the 1971 War of Independence.
